The right way: During a "Safety On Wheels" program presented by Hubbard Optimist Club on April 15 at St. Patrick School in Hubbard, from left, Lou Carsone, acting Hubbard City Police Chief, and Todd Coonce, Hubbard Township Police Chief, taught second grade students proper hand signals to use while riding their bikes on roadways. During the bike safety program the students also learned that if a city or township police officer sees them wearing a helmet while riding a bike, they will receive a certificate for a free treat from Hubbard Dairy Queen. Following the bike safety program the Optimist Club gave each student a new bike helmet.

Clean spirited club members: Members of the Rotary Club of Austintown joined forces with the Fitch Interact Club for a semiannual cleaning of Kirk Road from Route 46 to Whispering Pines Drive, which is about 112 miles. On January 31, 1961, a Mercury Redstone launch from Cape Canaveral carried the chimpanzee "Ham" over 640 kilometers down range in an arching trajectory that reached a peak of 254 kilometers above the Earth. The mission was successful and Ham performed his lever pulling task well in response to the flashing light. NASA used chimpanzees and other primates to test the Mercury Capsule before launching the first American astronaut Alan Shepard in May 1961. The successful flight and recovery confirmed the soundness of the Mercury Redstone systems.

School system upgraded: Youngstown Schools Superintendent Dr. Connie Hathorn, the honored guest at the April 11 meeting of Austintown Rotary Club, discussed his revitalization plan to restructure the district. He said middle school students will encompass two sixth and seventh grade academies at Volney and Wilson, and P. Ross Berry will become an eighth and ninth grade academy. Interviews and/or auditions will be required for acceptance for the visual performing arts program and for acceptance in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs. Hathorn, center, is thanked for his enlightening talk by Susan Leetch, Rotary president, and Jerry Haber, program chairman.
Dressed to help: Students at St. Patrick Elementary School, 38 E. Water St., Hubbard, held a dress down day recently to raise funds for victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The youngsters proved they care about those in need around the world by collecting $200 to be used by Catholic Charities to help victims of the disaster. Sporting the casual clothing they had the privilege of wearing to school after contributing to the fund are second grade students, from left, Daniel Rosser, Claire Riffle, Robert Mild and Olivia Robinson.

A kindergartener who brought a loaded gun to his Houston elementary school Tuesday was among three students injured by fragments when it fired after falling from his pocket as he sat down for lunch, officials said. in the Ross Elementary School cafeteria, spraying fragments at the students, said Houston Independent School District Assistant Police Chief Robert Mock. Two 6 year old boys, including the one who had the gun, were wounded in the foot, said district spokesman Jason Spencer. A 5 year old girl also suffered a foot injury.
A heartwarming trend: Jayda Benson, at left, and Katherine Kali, fourth grade students at Holy Family School on Center Road, Poland, cuddle up in blankets they made for premature babies in the special care nursery at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. The two are members of the Acts of Random Kindness group, which recently made blankets from material donated by Melinda Miller, Jayda's mother. The blankets were delivered to the hospital, where the ARK girls viewed babies through the window and met one of the mothers, who recently delivered triplets.

The Hubbard Optimist Club had its 57th annual oratorical contest recently, featuring the topic "If I were the leader of the world the first issue I would address would be. ." Students wrote essays to finish the sentence. Above are two of the winners. Gabriella Hosack took first place among girls in eighth grade at St. Patrick School in Hubbard with her essay focusing on medical issues. Justin Oaks took first place among boys for his essay focusing on poverty issues. The two students will advance to regional competition in Springfield, Ohio.
